During the harsh years following the 1929 stock market crash, Detroit, Hamtramck, and Highland Park faced an economic downturn so severe that by 1933, the cities’ governments resorted to issuing scrip—substitute money—to meet payroll demands. Led by Mayor Frank Murphy, who empathetically addressed unemployment through initiatives like the Mayor's Unemployment Committee, Detroit faced widespread financial challenges, with massive layoffs and a soaring jobless rate. As people withdrew funds during the Depression, leading to a financial crisis, the city issued scrip as a temporary alternative currency, effectively used to pay municipal employees and manage outstanding tax debts. Despite initial acceptance by businesses, the scrip program was eventually phased out by mid-1934 as the city's financial situation improved, demonstrating a unique historical response to economic hardship. Today, surviving Detroit scrip notes, crafted with authentic designs resembling real currency, serve as collector's items, offering a glimpse into a challenging chapter of the cities history.
