Art, History, and Oddities of The Detroit People Mover
Art, History, and Oddities of The Detroit People Mover
The People Mover is closed from August to November 2024. Due to scheduled maintenance, this tour has been suspended until the reopening.
The Detroit People Mover is our much-maligned conversation piece of an incomplete public transit system in downtown Detroit. Providing 2,413,414 rides in 2015 (and 268,900 in 2020), it hides secrets, fantastic art, heritage sites, and even a three hundred-year-old artifact throughout its 2.9-mile loop. The People Mover is a driverless, fully-automated, rapid transit line that travels a one-way loop through the heart of the City. The total round trip time is only 14 minutes- so let's be honest- you’re not traveling that far but the amount you’ll learn will leave you shocked, awed, and happily proclaiming “all hail the DPM”. On this hour and a half tour, you’ll see millions of dollars of artwork that was included in the 13 stations after one woman's successful quest to save Detroit from cookie cutter identical stations. You'll learn why the train originally ran clockwise, see the man who has spent the last three decades reading the exact same paper, and finally, understand why Detroit has its very own Times Square. We hope you'll come along and leave with a whole new appreciation for the historic Detroit People Mover.
This tour is a blast all year long! But, we encourage you to dress for the weather with hats, gloves, and jackets as appropriate. The stations are heated, but they do not warm past 68 degrees. The tour leaves promptly, at the ticketed time, from the Greektown People Mover Station. Late arrivals unfortunately can not be accommodated. The station can be accessed through the Hollywood Casino at Greektown, taking advantage of their free (with validation) secured parking, or from the street using on-street or surface lot parking (prices range from $1 per hour on city meters to $20 in some lots). Please meet your guide OUTSIDE the turnstiles where our guide will provide you with your token to ride. At the end of the tour we will return you back to the same station. Children are welcome on this tour, however all guests should be able to walk nearly a mile, climb stairs, stand for half an hour stretches, and generally be awesome.
Your order confirmation email will serve as your only ticket- nothing will ship to your address. Please save your email and be prepared to show it on your phone or printed to board the bus. (We do this to avoid the ticketing fees that come along with ticketing systems. The price of your ticket will remain the same throughout checkout with no added fees or service charges.)
